A Global Climatology of Tropopause Folds in CAMS and MERRA‐2 Reanalyses

چکیده

Tropopause folds are the main mechanism underlying stratosphere-to-troposphere transport and influence tropospheric composition weather systems by triggering convection. Here, we present global climatology of tropopause in Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis atmospheric products time period from 2003 to 2018. We applied a 3-D labeling algorithm CAMS MERRA-2 data detect folding events. In constructing their climatologies, show that bulk vertically shallow mainly found at subtropical zones vicinity jet streams, while deeper also occur over storm tracks, consistent with previous studies. Explosive Cyclogenesis: A Global Climatology Comparing Multiple Reanalyses

A global climatology for rapid cyclone intensification has been produced from the second NCEP reanalysis (NCEP2), the 25-yr Japanese Reanalysis (JRA-25), and the ECMWF reanalyses over the period 1979–2008. An improved (combined) criterion for identifying explosive cyclones has been developed based on preexisting definitions, offering a more balanced, normalized climatological distribution. The ...

A Climatology of the Tropical Tropopause Layer

The tropical tropopause layer (TTL) is a transition region between the troposphere and the stratosphere. In this study the vertical extent of the TTL is diagnosed from radiosonde and ozonesonde profiles in the tropics and a climatology of this layer is presented. The radiative balance in the TTL is also characterized. The TTL is locally defined as extending from the level of the lapse rate mini...

A novel tropopause-related climatology of ozone profiles

A new ozone climatology, based on ozonesonde and satellite measurements, spanning the altitude region between the earth’s surface and ∼60 km is presented (TpO3 climatology). This climatology is novel in that the ozone profiles are categorized according to calendar month, latitude and local tropopause heights. Compared to the standard latitude–month categorization, this presentation improves the...

A global blended tropopause based on ERA data. Part I: Climatology

A new tropopause definition, based on a flow-dependent blending of the traditional thermal tropopause with one based on potential vorticity, has been developed. The benefits of such a blending algorithm are most apparent in regions with synoptic scale fluctuations between tropical and extratropical airmasses. The properties of the local airmass determine the relative contributions to the locati...

Identification and climatology of cut-off lows near the tropopause.

Cut-off low pressure systems (COLs) are defined as closed lows in the upper troposphere that have become completely detached from the main westerly current. These slow-moving systems often affect the weather conditions at the earth's surface and also work as a mechanism of mass transfer between the stratosphere and the troposphere, playing a significant role in the net flow of tropospheric ozon...
